Reliance Jio’s 4G feature phone, bookings for which opened from 5.30 pm on Thursday, saw an impressive response from customers with bookings touching 3-4 million till the time of going to press. Retailers said that the bookings are continuing and the numbers will go up. Reliance Jio did not reply to an email query. Retailers said that bookings within the first few hours touching around 4 million is “quite impressive” as the company plans to sell around 4-5 million handsets every week in the first five to six months.
Bookings for the phone can be done both online through the MyJio app and Jio’s official website and offline at Reliance Digital outlets and Jio Centres. The phones can be booked for Rs 500 while the rest of the refundable security amount of Rs 1,000 can be paid at the time of delivery, which is expected to start after September 1. In fact, the company’s website crashed more than once on Thursday evening as the load on it increased.
To make the deliveries, Reliance has launched a massive exercise by roping in logistics companies as well as its own workforce. It plans to deliver 1 lakh handsets every day to meet the rush.
The Jio phone is targeted at 500 million users who do not use smartphones but feature phones, which today does not provide access to video and data.
The JioPhone will sport a 2-megapixel rear camera and a front VGA camera. It will have 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB internal storage with the option of expanding it to 128 GB using an SD card. The handset will come with a 2,000 mAh battery and will have a 2.4 inch screen.
